K-12 Schools

For over 25 years, the primary area of design focus for SFMI has been the design of educational facilities. In the last 15 years, we have designed communications and educational technology systems including classroom presentation and projection systems, distance-learning systems, outside plant (underground) and interior structure cabling systems (BDF, IDF and category cabling distribution), districtwide LAN and WAN data network electronics and wireless networks, districtwide telephone/VoIP systems, district owned inter-site private fiber-optic metropolitan area networks, public address/mass notification systems, master clock systems, broadband (cable television) distribution systems as well as sound, video and theatrical systems into more than 300 K-12 schools.

As acoustical engineers, we assist the architect in preparing submittals to the Green Building Council and the Coalition for High Performance Schools by documenting the LEED compliant design values incorporated in the structures.

Our typical K-12 school scope of work includes:

• Pre-design: Working with school site and District representatives to develop an implementation program and budget, preparation of Educational Technology Master Plans and Technology Implementation Plans, pre-bond Condition Assessment studies and needs assessments.
• Design Development: Coordination with other designers to define plans for new communications closets, new electrical services and new mechanical system. If the District does not already have such designers under contract for this work, SFMI may act as "Prime Design" and hire other Design Professionals to form a complete team for special projects.
• Contract Documents: Preparation of Contract Documents (drawings and specifications), as well as preparation of General Conditions and Bid Forms.
• Bid: Assist the District in putting the Project out to public bid, including marketing the Project to hundreds of specialty bidders, hosting bid walks, and preparing necessary addenda as changes emerge.
• Construction: Review submittals and shop drawings, provide on-site observation of Contractor work, observe proof-of-performance testing.
